“SUMMER SUSTAINABILITY INSTITUTE” PROVIDES FIRST OF ITS KIND TRAINING FOR MERCER COUNTY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS
The Mercer County Vocational Technical School District, in partnership with the Municipal Land Use Center at The College of NJ (MLUC@TCNJ), is offering students the opportunity to learn about sustainability and “green collar” careers through a 2 week summer institute.
The program will be offered at the Sypek Campus of the Mercer County Vocational Technical Schools from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. from June 23rd through July 3rd. The Institute will educate students about sustainability and showcase efforts that are taking place in Mercer County. Students will engage in hands-on learning through projects and field trips to local businesses and green buildings. Field trips to Cherry Grove Organic Farm, TerraCycle and to the Broad Street Bank Building will enable students to learn first-hand about organic agriculture, recycling, and green building. BOOST (Building Open Opportunity Structures Together), a local community organization, has helped to facilitate the tour of the Broad Street Bank Building and arrange for students to learn about efforts to “green” local restaurant, Gilmore’s Café, in Trenton.
The Summer Sustainability Institute is part of a larger effort which is being facilitated by MLUC@TCNJ with funding provided by the NJ Department of Education. Green Jobs for NJ: A Sustainable Career Track Initiative will infuse education for sustainability into career and technical school curricula and provide high school students with structured learning opportunities to study green collar jobs of the future.
By providing opportunities for middle school students to learn about career and technical education and its relationship to sustainability, the program will encourage students to understand how the choices they make every day can combat global warming and climate change, and about green careers and the vocational programs that can help them to prepare for a more sustainable future.
There is no cost to participate, but students must register for the program.
